"Representing the West in the Arabic Language: The Slave Narrative of Omar of Ibn Said"

Focusing on the most significant distinctions of Omar Ibn Said's narrative, its use of Arabic language and Qur'anic references, this article examines the ways in which Omar's narrative reveals a differing image of the "West" and the "Christian." It is represented not as that to which the African must aspire and with which Omar must necessarily affiliate, but rather as "Other" in the realm of this enslave Muslim African's world.
