Dear Professor Forbes,

I am much enjoying your biography of the great comedian Bert Williams. However, I did notice that you write that he emigrated to the United States in 1884. This is in fact incorret. According to the 1880 U.S. Census Frederick and Julia Williams and their 5 year old son, Egbert were living in Manhattan, where Fredeick worked as a waiter. According to the 1900 Census Frederick had emigrated for the first time in 1869 and his wife (and probably the boy, too) came in 1880. By the way, I am working on a biography of the great comic Tim Moore, who once performed for Mr. Williams in a vaudeville tribute to him in 1915.

best wishes!

Hi Camille, Your last name is a common one in both The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Isles. Is there a connection? Enquiring minds would like to knowl. I'm a native of The Bahamas with roots in The Turks and Caicos and Mali. My mother's maiden name is Forbes of Turks and caicos. I'm currently researching Bert Williams and would like additional info. I am in the process of ordering your books. I have a copy of his birth certificate, etc. Look forward to hearing from you. Aaron Knowles www.kikiknowles@aol.com

I haven't read your book, but you seem to repeat the claim that Bert Williams was born in the Bahamas, and not Antigua. There is evidence (he is said to be registered in the 'Book of Births') that he was born in Antigua; what is the evidence that he was born in the Bahamas?

A. Birth certificate documents that Williams was born in New Providence, Bahamas.--Camille F. Forbes
